Andy Townsend has claimed that Tottenham transfer target, Gareth Bale, has just been told to ‘clear off’ by Real Madrid, as he told talkSPORT Drive.

The former Republic of Ireland captain compared how Bale has left Madrid to how the La Liga champions are saying their goodbyes to Marcelo, who had a farewell press conference.

Nonetheless, with Wales qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this November, Bale needs to find the club this summer that will provide him with the much-needed minutes to thrive and be ready for the major tournament.

Tottenham have been one of the clubs muted as bringing Bale back to north London, as well as a possible fairytale move to his hometown club of Cardiff City.

Either way, Townsend made it clear that the 32-year-old needs to sign for a team with an ‘understanding manager’.

One Player Your Club MUST Sell This Summer (2022)

“It’s going to be very interesting where Gareth turns up because he hasn’t played much again in his last season at Madrid,” said Townsend.

“Not all down to his own doing. They fell out of love with him, which is still incredible really when he has five Champions League medals.

“You have Marcelo, who is their most decorated player getting this huge send-off. And Gareth has been just allowed to slide off the door and clear off.

“He has to have the right club and an understanding manager because it appears that Gareth has had to be wrapped in cotton wool at recent times.”

BALE TO RETIRE?

There was a lot of question marks as to whether Bale would retire if Wales didn’t qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

Well, now they are heading to Qatar, he will, of course, be joining them on the world’s biggest stage.

But will he want to be playing his final professional game in the colours of his country, regardless of what happens at the World Cup?

In truth, it wouldn’t be a surprise if that’s the case and he ends up signing a short-term contract at his next club – all in all, that surely doesn’t suit Tottenham.
