To say expectations were high for Better Call Saul season 6 episode 11 would be an understatement. All they had to do was title the instalment Breaking Bad.

Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, the prequel and spin-off to Breaking Bad has served as both an expertly crafted crime thriller and legal drama, bringing back Bob Odenkirk to reprise the iconic role of Saul Goodman. Or Jimmy McGill, rather.

Ever since it premiered on AMC in 2015, fans of the predecessor have been wondering how Bryan Cranston’s Walter White and Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman would fit into the timeline.

At long last, the duo made their debut in the recent episode and their inclusion has generated quite the discussion. However, don’t let the cameos distract you from an intriguing detail at the beginning. Let’s take a moment to talk about Bill Oakley in Better Call Saul.

Bill Oakley nod in Better Call Saul season 6 episode 11

As you know, Bill Oakley (portrayed by Peter Diseth) was a deputy district attorney for Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Jimmy interacts with him throughout the series and he has actually made an appearance in every single season. He’s somewhat of a down-on-his-luck presence; something of a reminder of who Jimmy could have become if he didn’t grow ambitious in the criminal sphere.

Taunted by vending machines and lesser cases, he’s a sorry figure.

However, Saul’s former secretary Francesca drives past a bench on the way to call Saul at a payphone and sees that Bill has now gone out alone and started William Oakley & Associates.

Francesca explains that Bill is now a defence attorney – he initially mistakes her, thinking Bill has come out as gay – and, as you’ll know, drawing attention to such details in Better Call Saul is never mere coincidence or chance.

A Bill and Jimmy reunion in the works?

We concluded episode 11 with Gene breaking into a man’s home with the intention of stealing private financial information. It’s part of his latest immoral scheme to get some money behind the wall.

However, with two episodes left, we can’t help but believe Gene’s sloppy and reckless approach to the task foreshadows yet another downfall. He is presented as a man who is beginning to care less and less, with his carlessness perhaps being prompted by the earlier phone call with Kim that we didn’t get to eavesdrop on.

It’s likely that Gene will be caught and Bill could very well become his defence attorney.

#BetterCallSaul didn’t randomly set up Bill Oakley as a defense lawyer now for there not to be a payoff. He might get a new client next episode?
