Tony Cascarino has backed Oleksandr Zinchenko to make Gabriel Martinelli a better player after the new Arsenal signing from Manchester City had a stunning debut at Crystal Palace.

Oleksandr Zinchenko ‘so comfortable’ in Arsenal debut vs Crystal Palace

Tony Cascarino has waxed lyrical over Oleksandr Zinchenko on talkSPORT after the Ukraine international delivered an inspiring debut performance as Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 2-0. And the ex-Chelsea man feels the defender will let Gabriel Martinelli fulfil his full potential.

Mikel Arteta afforded Zinchenko his competitive Gunners bow at Selhurst Park with Kieran Tierney only fit enough for the bench. The Scot had endured a limited pre-season while he continued his recovery from a knee injury, which required surgery at the end of last term.

Arsenal signed Zinchenko during the off-season to afford Arteta superior cover at left-back than Nuno Tavares provided last season. He cost the Gunners £32m from Manchester City, and agreed to a four-year contract on the back of securing his fourth Premier League title.

Zinchenko offered a strong performance on his Arsenal debut at Crystal Palace in behind Martinelli on the left-flank. He also connected with the Brazilian to break the deadlock in the first-half by redirecting Bukayo Saka’s corner into the heart of the Eagles’ six-yard box.

Cascarino is confident the Ukraine international will now help Martinelli to unlock his full potential at the Emirates, having been captivated by what the Gunners’ addition showed.

“Zinchenko on the ball, I mean, wow!” Cascarino said. “He just keeps the ball for fun. He’s so comfortable and not just at full-back, but dropping into the midfield area, as a lot of Man City players do.

“Martinelli is never going to have a better opportunity of having a left-sided full-back-***-wideman to help him become a better player.”

As well as assisting Martinelli at Crystal Palace on Friday, Zinchenko came close to scoring on his Arsenal debut. But Vicente Guaita managed to parry the full-back’s attempt in the early stages. His impact also regressed as the game wore on after some energetic forays.

Martinelli, meanwhile, will have left Selhurst Park feeling he could have done more with his chances in south London. The forward wasted an early chance to break the deadlock with his shot going just wide of the past after Gabriel Jesus burst through with a mazy run.
